Dry needling is a therapeutic treatment that involves inserting a thin, solid needle into a tight muscle knot, or trigger point, to relieve pain and improve movement. We may also attach electrodes to the needles to provide electric stim deep down into the affected muscles in order to reduce pain and muscle spasm.
Dry needling and acupuncture both use fine needles, but differ in their underlying philosophies, training, and treatment goals. Dry needling is based on modern Western medicine principles and targets specific "trigger points" in muscles to relieve pain and improve joint and muscle function, while acupuncture comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and focuses on balancing the body's energy (qi) along meridians to treat a wider range of conditions.
During your first visit, we will discuss your medical history and any current symptoms or concerns you may have. We will also perform a physical exam and may perform or order diagnostic tests, if necessary.
Most treatments are only 20 minutes, but may be longer for new patients or new complaints.
Most conditions respond well to treatment once per week. Acute cases may require twice per week. In general, pain should be greatly reduced or eliminated after 4-6 weeks/treatments, but more visits may be necessary to restore full function to the problem area. Every treatment plan is developed on a case by case basis.
